What is the difference between a
marriage license and marriage certificate?

A marriage license is what you normally get first, and it’s a USA county or city-issued application to be married.

Once you’ve had your marriage or wedding ceremony, then get your marriage license signed by the wedding officiant, and it has been turned in to the proper city or county office. Only then will you receive an official marriage certificate.
